Hiking in Vermont

Hiking in Vermont is a very popular activity. The famous long trial runs straight through the center of Vermont, hugging the mountain ridges. This trail is 270 miles long, with 175 miles of side trails and 70 or so cabins and primitive shelters. But there are lots of other trails to hike also.
Up in the resort town of Stowe, Vermont you can find plenty of hiking trails and bike paths. Driving up the mountain road to the top of Mt. Mansfield and hiking along the ridge is very popular. The view from the top is spectacular. Vermont has many small streams that make lots of small waterfalls for a beautiful view or place to stop and eat.
There are also plenty of hiking trails in Vermont that are short, maybe just a stroll through the woods or along a paved path. So there are hiking trails for all kinds of people and abilities. Vermont tends to have a rocky ground, which means most wood trails get worn down to nice solid rocks that make the trail a stair step up the mountains.
Because of this you want to wear a good light pair of hiking shoes. Sneakers don’t have enough support to prevent you from twisting an ankle. There are lots of outdoor stores all over Vermont that sell good hiking shoes. Then we have the die hard hikers that do the whole thing.
This type of hiking in Vermont involves hiking for days, stopping into bed & breakfast Inns or lodges at night close to the trail, or camping out on the trail with tents or using shelters that are made on the trial. People that hike the long trial often do this.
Because the long trial follows up to the top of Mt. Mansfield in Stowe a lot of hikers stay overnight at one of the Inns in Stowe. Waking up to fresh coffee and pancakes or French toast with that pure Vermont maple syrup poured over it is a great way to start any day!
There are plenty of outdoor gear shops in Vermont that sell any and all camping gear that you need. One thing everyone wants to get is a good insect repellent. The no-see-ems and other insects will drive you crazy if you don’t have plenty of repellent.
As always you need to dress in layers when hiking in Vermont. You can quickly work up a sweat going up a hill, but suddenly feel cold once the sun goes down or it gets cloudy.
